In no particular order, here are 6 great uses of Twitter.

1)    Keeping up to date with current affairs

Twitter is a great way to stay up to date with a particular topic. It utilises a system known as hash tagging which enables users to narrow their searches by topics other Twitter users are discussing. For instance if a user wants to find out what other users have to say about Iran’s recent presidential election they can type #iranelection into Twitter’s search box and a real time results page, detailing which twitter users are discussing the topic will be displayed. http://twitter.com/#search?q=%23iranelection

2)    Micro blogging

Although Twitter has evolved beyond its roots as a micro blogging platform, tapping in 140 characters is still a great way of letting people know what you’re up to.

3)    Finding a job

Social media analysts suggest that some users of Twitter are tweeting to let the world know they are looking for a job. They even suggest that a number of employers are posting vacancies on the site

4)    Responding to customers

Many companies are using the power of Twitter to enhance their brand reputation. They are doing this by addressing tweets that relate to their products. This strategy enables businesses to obtain and address product feedback in real time, be it positive or negative. It also enables them to provide their consumers with a level of online customer service.

5)    Staying in touch with friends and family

Like Facebook, Twitter is a great way to stay in touch with friends and arrange social gatherings. It’s also a great way for those in another part of the world to stay connected to you.

6)    Selling product

Businesses are not only using Twitter to enhance their brands and respond to customers, they are also using it to sell products. Recently Dell USA claimed to have made $3 million dollars worth of sales through tweets, which drive traffic directly to deals on their outlet site.
