Twitter Tool Tuesday – Bitly

Print Friendly

Bitly is one of the most popular URL shortening applications, helping you share, track and analyse your links. URL shortening became popular as a result of Twitter’s limit of 140 characters. Bitly will shorten any URL down to just 13 characters, saving you lots of space.

Bitly offer a number of tools to make URL shortening easier including

  • the Side Bar Bookmarklet which allows you to shorten a URL wherever you are on the web
  • Browser Extensions for both Firefox & Chrome allowing you to expand bit.ly links on any web page to see page titles and links to bitly Info pages before clicking – eliminating any destination trust issues!

Bitly Pro also gives you the opportunity to set up your own personal custom URL (for example, the BBC use bbc.in) – you can find out more about how to do that here.

While URL shorteners are extremely useful, there are still dangers when using them – take a look at our blog post: Beware the Dangers of the URL Shortener!
